AI-POWERED EXAM-QUESTION TAGGING DELIVERS CLARITY FOR STUDENT-PERFORMANCE ANALYTICS

mapEDU objectively discovers and assigns keywords for health-profession educators challenged by lack of question-category tagging and uniformity

Riverside, CA, April 28, 2022: Analyzing student performance and targeting intervention in health-profession schools is critical to student success and the future of healthcare. It is also fraught with data issues that culminate in garbage in, garbage out.

Simple exam scores of 80% can mean completely different challenges for each student. Accurate category tagging of exam questions is what allows exam software to identify specific content areas where students need improvement. Leave question tagging to question authors, though, and problems quickly pile up. That’s because manually identifying keywords is prone to subjectivity, lack of term standardization, varying degrees of comprehensiveness, typos, and fatigue over the effort required to properly tag each question.

Today at AACOM’s Educating Leaders 2022 conference, mapEDU’s CEO Seth Hernandez announced, “mapEDU can do the heavy lifting and discover keywords–ready for review within minutes.” Through integration with the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s MeSH on Demand, for each question, MeSH terms and their related hierarchy of terms quickly display. Other keyword lists and learning outcomes are on the roadmap.

Here’s how it works:

  • Users export existing questions and upload to mapEDU

  • Through Natural Language Processing, relevant MeSH terms are discovered

  • Users, and even groups of users, can review mapEDU-generated tags by question, select parent and child terms, link back to the library, deselect any pre-existing tag, or add a tag such as Remove or Revise

  • Updated questions are downloaded for import into exam software

“Streamlined, accurate tagging of assessment items using mapEDU and standardized MeSH terms should prove to make ‘closing the loop’ on curricular and assessment issues easier than ever,” responds Randall K. Harris, PhD, Associate Dean and Professor, Preclinical Sciences at William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine. As an existing customer, Harris has worked closely with the mapEDU team to help optimize the exam tagging offering.

mapEDU’s Exam Tagging is available now.

AUTOMATED SHORTCUT TO MESH KEYWORDS QUICKLY IDENTIFIES WHERE MEDICAL TOPICS ARE TAUGHT

Curriculum review eased for health-science educators; mapEDU integrates with NLM MeSH on Demand to objectively discover keywords used in courses

Riverside, CA, June 17, 2021: For any curriculum review, manually identifying keywords taught is fraught with issues: subjectivity, lack of term standardization, varying degrees of comprehensiveness, and fatigue over the months it requires to collect session-level coverage.

How deep can you go? Course objectives? Session titles? Session objectives?

How deep would you like to go? Actual session content?

mapEDU now supports it all. Upload any digital course content, including recorded lectures, and in addition to mapping to competencies, mapEDU will surface MeSH vocabulary used. Through its integration with the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s MeSH on Demand, educators can easily respond to, “Where is [any MeSH term] taught in your program?”

This level of detail ensures users can:

  • quickly identify where a topic of interest is covered and eliminate manual tracking

  • standardize keyword tagging and eliminate redundancy

  • easily respond to accreditation questions

  • use MeSH terms as keywords for Curriculum Inventory reporting

  • evaluate curriculum for better integration and potential course revisions

Of special interest among some mapEDU users is the ability to objectively compare what is designed to be taught and what is actually taught—without having to sit in on every class session.

mapEDU users can search for specific terms occurring in events as well as create ranked lists of terms for comparisons between courses and throughout a program. At the event/session level, mapEDU surfaces as a ranked list the MeSH terms discovered in the event’s lectures, PowerPoints, PDF handouts, and other documents. For the course and program levels, users designate a set of events that make up a course or program.

PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS NURTURE PERFECT STORM FOR AI-DRIVEN CURRICULUM MAPPING SOLUTION

Fully remote team launches cloud-based, graphical mapEDU that leverages recorded lectures

Riverside, CA, February 3, 2021: Through 2020’s necessity of remote learning and recorded lectures, the team that years ago developed MapRadish, an AI algorithm to ease the pain and subjectivity of curriculum mapping for professional healthcare schools, has greatly advanced its ability to discover what students are being taught. Now rebranded and relaunched as a cloud-based, self-serve platform, mapEDU can process actual classroom content—including audio and video lectures, presentations, and handouts—and map their coverage of national and internal learning outcomes for accreditation or curriculum revision.

Actionable reports graphically display:

  • Highly accurate and comprehensive curriculum maps for knowledge discovery and data visualization

  • Objectively scored compliance to internal and national accreditation outcomes

  • Gaps and redundancies in programs

“Faculty time is both expensive and difficult to get,” says CEO Joel Heinrichs, adding “With mapEDU, users skip the long, tedious requirements of faculty surveys and interviews and instead upload easily accessed course data.” Course data can vary depending on the school’s requirements. For fast and accurate course-level coverage maps, course syllabi or course descriptions and learning objectives may be used.

mapEDU computes "hits and misses" to generate a variety of reports detailing how well your curriculum covers outcomes.

Greater insights come when administrators or faculty upload event-level content (e.g., a single class meeting’s mp4, pptx, pdf files stored in a learning management system like Blackboard or Canvas). Sean Leonard, Assistant Dean of Assessment, Wegmans School of Pharmacy, is counting on mapEDU’s more comprehensive and objective data analytics to help quantify the level of equivalence between St. Fisher’s online and brick-and-mortar pharmacy programs. Having benefited from the algorithm’s output, Leonard says, “I believe mapEDU has tremendous potential for continuous quality improvement.”

To launch mapEDU, the company more than doubled its ranks with the onboarding of several SaaS veterans who bring executive, sales, and marketing expertise. Working remotely and together, they are launching a sophisticated, cloud-based AI that has leveraged the byproducts of remote education.
